Arrow-shaped pointers installed along trunk roads and national highways in Hokkaido serve as a visual guide by pointing at the edge of the carriageway. These pointers、 called yabane (arrow blades)、 were originally developed to indicate the roadside for snow removal. They also provide delineation at night and during snowstorm、 when the road alignment is difficult to discern、 by indicating the road alignment. [*]This study summarizes the history of arrow-shaped pointers、 outlines their specifications and discusses their effectiveness as delineating facilities. |
