As Hokkaido is a cold region situated in the northern part of Japan、 cut slopes of roads are often damaged by frost heave and freeze-thaw action. As a measure to repair such damage、 cut slopes in the prefecture are often covered with special gabion boxes using highly permeable gravel material. To date、 there have been no studies on the validity of installation or appropriate size/thickness regarding gabion boxes、 the properties of gravel material fillings or other details concerning special gabion boxes. In addition、 there have also been cases of deformation in special gabion boxes due to frost heave.[*]Accordingly、 the conventional frost-heaving gravel material was replaced with non-frost-heaving material to assess how the frost-heave extent、 freezing depth、 frost-heave force and other ground properties are affected by frost heave and freeze-thaw action. The results indicated the feasibility of reducing the extent of frost heave by replacing the conventional material with gravel. |
